As a former executive I had often been involved in making decisions about the development of employees or job cuts in my organisation. I sometimes had a nagging question over whether we were addressing the specific needs of certain individuals, but felt reassured that we were doing our best by providing them with our standard career development or outplacement program. Then the table turned and I was made redundant; something most of us can expect to go through at least once in our career.
For the first time in my life I got to really stop and think about what do to next. I didn’t want to jump back into a corporate role. I was very lucky that I was given some flexibility with my outplacement. So, over dinner that night while I was discussing what were the best outplacement services for me, I realised then that most people don’t get this choice, this ability to drive the process, to determine what they need and when they need it. So I decided to change that and give people the choice that I so valued not just in outplacement, but in their broader personal and career development as well.
